Juniors Show Off Outdoor Robots
SOCORRO, N.M. May 1, 2012 - Students enrolled in EE 382 (Introduction to Design) during their junior year worked in groups to address an open-ended design project. This year's project was to design an outdoor robot capable of remotely locating a beacon (representing a lost hiker or downed aircraft) that emitted an RF signal at 438MHz. The resulting robots navigated via GPS and compass, and took bearings to the RF beacon using antennas and electronics for signal processing mounted on the robots. Knowing locations of the robot as it moves and bearings to the beacon with respect to the robot, triangulation can be performed to determine the longitude and latitude of the beacon.
