September 2023

On behalf of the Office of Graduate Studies, I would like to welcome all of our graduate students to New Mexico Tech and wish you a great Fall 2023 semester. Go to class, don't be afraid to ask for help, and don't hesitate to stop by the Graduate Office if you have any questions or need our support.

This semester we started the implementation of tuition remission for graduate contracts and have transitioned to using DynamicForms to process contracts electronically instead of AdobeSign. We believe that for the most part things went very smoothly but we greatly appreciate it if you can share any comments or concerns so that we can continue improving our processes.

We wish you all a happy, healthy, and successful Fall semester.

MS in Mineral Engineering

Advisor

Dr. William X. Chavez

Dawn Walatis

Ernest Brakohiapa is a final year graduate student pursuing a Master of Science degree in Mineral Engineering, specializing in Mineral Exploration at New Mexico Tech. Ernest’s research focuses on studying the petrography and ascertaining the economic potential of the Banded Iron Formation of the Neoproterozoic-Age Buem Formation in eastern Ghana, under the supervision of Dr. William X. Chavez Jr as research advisor at the Mineral Engineering Department. The research is to contribute to the diversification of the mining sector in Ghana due to over reliance of gold as the major mineral supporting the local economy.

Prior to becoming a Techie graduate student, Ernest obtained a Diploma in Geological Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, School of Mines (currently known as University of Mines and Technology), Tarkwa, Ghana and a Post Graduate Diploma in the Application of GIS in Local Agenda 21 Processes, from the University of Applied Sciences (Technische Fachhochschule), Berlin, Germany. Ernest also worked at the Minerals Commission of Ghana as a Principal Mineral Titles Officer, supervising mineral right application process. He also worked as a GIS expert at the Ghana Geological Survey Authority and contributed to the production of the Geological Map of Ghana 1:1 000 000, in 2009.

Ernest Brakohiapa is currently the President of the Society of Economic Geologists, New Mexico Tech Student Chapter.

"The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) is an international organization of members with interests in the field of economic geology with representatives from industry, academia, and government institutions. This year, the annual conference addressed the major challenges presented by the accelerated consumption of energy transition and other strategic metals.

The New Mexico Tech SEG Student chapter attended the SEG 2023 annual conference in London, United Kingdom from 23rd August to 30th August 2023. The conference provided students with a valuable opportunity to showcase the university at a booth – to attract future undergraduate, masters, and PhD students. The booth was also strategic to attract professionals to various field training and collaboration programs that make New Mexico Tech students stand out in the industry.

Ernest Brakohiapa showcased New Mexico Tech’s commitment to quality research with his thesis on “Petrography and Economic Potential of Banded Iron Formation of the Neoproteozoic-Age Buem Formation, Ghana”. Ernest's research presentation contributed to discussions at the conference and highlighted the depth of research relevant to the global geoscience community.

The chapter’s participation at SEG 2023 Conference was a significant step towards strengthening our ties within the geoscience community and expanding the horizons of New Mexico Tech on the international stage.

During the event, we were actively involved with students who expressed interest in our programs, ensuring that we collected their contact information for future communications. In addition, we networked with professors who showed interest in potentially collaborating with our chapter on various fields - geophysics, geochemistry, mining, ventilation, and geology. We discussed the possibility of them becoming professors at our institution or participating in courses and field trips, further enhancing our university's global reach and academic excellence.

With the objective of fostering camaraderie and leaving a lasting impression, we also distributed souvenirs to conference attendees. These tokens of appreciation served as a small sign of gratitude for their engagement and participation in the event. Our commitment to building meaningful connections extended beyond conversations and presentations, as we wanted to ensure that everyone had a solid reminder of their interaction with the New Mexico Tech SEG student chapter at the Conference in London, UK.

The SEG Club will like to thank the Graduate Students Association (GSA), The Dean of Students - Jennifer Chapman, and the Dean for Graduate Studies - Dr Aly El Osery for supporting our Chapter's activity through funding.

We encourage all students interested in joining the SEG to connect with us through techconnect and keep abreast with several events we have coming up this Fall 2023." - New Mexico Tech SEG Student chapter
