Md Mahmudul Hasan

Md Mahmudul Hasan is a master’s student in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Department at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, where he contributes as a graduate research assistant under the guidance of Dr. Deep Choudhuri. His research explores the non-classical nucleation of aluminum-based alloys, emphasizing the capture of metastable phases during the nucleation process—an advanced concept that diverges from the more traditional classical nucleation theory. An example of a non-classical nucleus is shown in the Figure below.

Hasan is proficient in classical molecular dynamics (MD) and ab initio MD and has expertise with specialized computational materials science software, including LAMMPS and VASP. In recognition of his contributions to materials science, Mahmudul was awarded the esteemed Ashman Award in April 2024, a significant accomplishment that highlights his excellence and commitment to advancing the field.

Mahmudul has published a research article as the lead author in the Journal of Materials Science: “Hasan, M.M., Srinivasan, S.G. and Choudhuri, D., 2024. Transformation-and twinning-induced plasticity in phase-separated bcc Nb-Zr alloys: an atomistic study. Journal of Materials Science, 59(12), pp.4728-4747.” In this work, he has used advanced hybrid MD-Monte Carlo technique to interrogate the effect of elemental segregations on the mechanical behavior for high-temperature Nb-Zr alloy meant for fusion/fission applications.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Md Mahmudul has a deep love for travel and the outdoors, particularly drawn to mountain landscapes and waterfalls, which provide him with a sense of adventure and tranquility. He also has a keen interest in cricket, served as a captain for the New Mexico Tech cricket team and leading the team in various tournaments, including events in Albuquerque. His leadership on the field complements his collaborative skills in the lab and classroom. Md Mahmudul is also passionate about volunteerism and community service. Back in Bangladesh, he was involved with Badhon, an organization dedicated to managing blood donations for people in need, where he worked to facilitate life-saving resources and support those in crisis.

Announcements

Time/Space to work on your thesis/dissertation

The Office of Graduate Studies will weekly announce on our website times when graduate students can come and work in our conference room on their thesis/dissertation. During this time you can focus on writing and you can ask questions as they come up whether about formatting, completion, copyright, plagiarism, etc. This is in addition to the services offered by the Writing & Communication Lab (WCL). If you are looking for writing support the WCL would be a much better resource. Please see below.

Writing & Communication Lab (WCL)

This is a tutoring resource committed to helping students become better writers and communicators through tailored and individual consultations. Tutors are experienced in STEM writing and offer consultations both in person and online, to undergraduate and graduate students. These resources are also available to our Distance Students as well so please take advantage.
