Student's Profile

Aubrey Zimmer

MS in Electrical Engineering

Advisor

Andrew Fierro

Aubrey Zimmer is working on her Master's degree in Electrical Engineering at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Aubrey was born and raised in Albuquerque and she graduated from NMT with her undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering in May of 2024 and has continued her education through a graduate research position under the guidance of Dr. Andrew Fierro, studying plasma physics. Her research, funded by Department of Energy - Fusion Energy Sciences, explores the simulation of electrons and ions in a gaseous medium that creates a steady plasma, particularly the secondary electron emission of DC discharges in Argon. A picture of the plasma in an experimental setup is shown below.

A highlight of her graduate research was presenting a poster at the Gaseous Electronics Conference held in Seoul, South Korea, in October of 2025. This opportunity, made possible by the support of NMT and Sandia National Laboratories, was one of the best travel experiences she could have asked for as someone who has not traveled much outside of New Mexico. Aubrey’s time as an undergraduate was filled with friends, classwork, and unforgettable memories from clubs and extracurricular activities. She also worked as a teaching assistant, lab attendant, and grader for the Electrical Engineering department during the school years, and was busy with research opportunities from AFRL under Dr. Noah Van Zandt and NMT under Dr. Kevin Wedeward during the summers. As she continues her research in plasma physics with Dr. Andrew Fierro, she has an appreciation for the smaller things in life that do not obey the classical physics she first learned as a freshman. Aubrey hopes to continue working on simulations for plasma physics applications in industry.
