Cabin Trip, Summer 2003
2003 Cabin Pictures
Thursday, June 5
Frank and I headed for the big Wyo. We drove 750 miles to Douglas, WY and stayed with my uncle Dan. When we arrived in Dougls, it was 48 degrees out.
Friday, June 6
We got up at 7:00am and headed for Casper, WY. In Casper we bought everything else we needed for the trip and then headed to Buffalo, WY. We ate lunch and shopped in Buffalo and then headed to the cabin. The drive up the mountain included light rain and sleet but was very nice. The drive into the cabin included lots of muddy, slick roads but was very do-able in Frank's Jeep. All our fun started when we attemped to leave the cabin. The last part of the road into the cabin was very muddy and at the end is a place to turn around. Lets just say the turn-around part went poorly. We were forced to chain up the front of the Jeep, and waste an hour of our time and over an 1/8th a tank of gas to get out of our mess. That night, we parked on top of the hill and walked down in to the cabin. When we went to bed, it was about 30 degrees out and was still sleeting.
Saturday, June 7
Getting up that morning was hard. It was a very chilling 20 degrees out and there was about an inch of snow on the ground. We made breakfast and were out of the cabin by 7:00am. The sun was out but so was the wind. We headed down to the lake and tried to fish but with the wind, we were unable to stay very long. We decided to head to the Jeep and try creek fishing. At 8:00am the temp was 26 and we decided to head into Buffalo to get gas and buy a few things we forgot, namely worms. We returned to the cabin about 11:00am and again tried to fish the lake but again, it was just too cold. We decided to go site seeing and ended up driving to Ten Sleep, then to Meadowlark lake where we were finally able to fish. The weather was much better my then, almost 40 degrees with little wind, and we caught 17 trout. We left the lake at 7:00pm and headed over Powder River pass to the cabin. Dinner was fish.
Sunday, June 8
This is the day we had waited for. At 7:00am it was ~30 degrees and the skies were clear. We packed up and were out of the cabin by 8:30. It was time to find the beaver ponds, we had sketchy directions but found them easily. The weather was wonderful with a clear sky and temps around 50 degrees. We caught 11 brook trout and only stopped when we ran out of worms. We left the beaver ponds at 11:00 and headed to Gillette to see Devils Tower. We finished out the day by driving to Cheyenne, stopping by Douglas to see my Uncle Dan along the way. We got a motel room and took our first shower in many days, shower ... good.
Monday, June 9
The destination for the day was Los Alamos, NM, 530 miles from Cheyenne. We stayed with Steve for the night.
Tuesday, June 10
We ended our trip with a stop in Alburquerque to see "2 Fast 2 Furious" and eating lunch, before heading home.
