VISITOR INFORMATION

Langmuir Laboratory welcomes visitors in July and August when the "monsoon season" arrives in New Mexico bringing frequent thunderstorms which are studied by researchers. The laboratory facilities are closed to the public other months of the year, but the Langmuir Research Site is open year-round for hiking and other permitted recreational activities, subject to National Forest regulations and specific closures which may be posted from time to time by the Magdalena Ranger District.

To visit the laboratory facilities when they are open (between about June 20 and August 20 each year) drive first to the Main Building, where a person is on duty to greet visitors, take them into the observation tower, and discuss research in progress. Visitors also may view a brief video and a display of rockets and other materials used in experiments.

This map shows the location of the main laboratory building and other structures. Some areas may be restricted during experiments.

Schools and service organizations may call the Langmuir Laboratory Office (575-835-5423) to arrange a tour for groups of up to about 20 people.

The Langmuir Research Site inside the Cibola National Forest is administered by the Magdalena Ranger District. Within the site are Forest Service Trailheads #8 - North Baldy; #11 - South Baldy; #14 - Six Mile Canyon; #19 - West Fork Sawmill Canyon; #21 - Hardy Springs;, #70 - Timber Peak; and #93 - East Fork Sawmill Canyon. One mile before the end of Forest Road 235, a gate which is locked when the laboratory is closed requires walking to Trailheads #19 and #21; there is trailhead parking outside the gate.

Water Canyon Campground, 4.5 miles off U.S. Highway 60 on the access road to Langmuir, offers improved U.S. Forest Service campsites.
