EE 212L: Determine the Unknowns

Objective: For this lab you will be given a "mystery box" containing two unique, passive elements (i.e., resistors, capacitors, inductors) connected in series or parallel. Your task is to determine what components are in the box, their values, and how they are connected. There will be two connections (terminals) to which you can connect for your experiments.

Prelab: Sketch all the possible configurations of the elements and carefully outline your test plan to determine the unknowns.

Laboratory Procedure:

  1. Acquire a mystery box from your instructor.
  2. Employ your test plan to experimentally determine what components are in the box, their values and how they are connected.
  3. Verify with your instructor that you are correct and then trade boxes, or if you desire, try your hand at a box with three elements!
