EE 212L: Voltage Conversion

Pre-lab:

  1. Review data sheets for regulator and DC-DC converter, and note key characteristics such as range for input voltages, range for output currents, rated output voltages, dropout voltages, etc.
  2. Design the voltage divider requested for Task 1 below giving some thought to the impact of the load resistor, resistor values and the fact that we have 1/4W resistors available in the part bins.

Objective: Characterize methods of generating DC voltages of desired values from a fixed (here 12V) source.

Tasks:

  1. 12V to 5V via voltage division (generate v-i curve using varied, but safe values for load resistor)
  2. 12V to 5V via linear regulator (note specifications; generate v-i curve using varied, but safe values for load resistor)
  3. 12V to +15V and -15V via DC-to-DC converter (note specifications and application notes; generate v-i curve using varied, but safe values for load resistor)
  4. Compare the three approaches investigated above, i.e., when would they be appropriate to use, advantages, disadvantages, etc.
