Project Requirements and Design Specifications

The project is in the area of sensor networks. Design a mobile sensor network with a minimum of two mobile nodes. Nodes will be placed at random in an area and a system has to be designed to localize the nodes and continuously record their location. The task will be to wonder in an area in search of an object. The sensor that finds the object should alert the other sensors, and in turn, all other sensors converge to the same location for confirmation.
  • Node Specifications
    • Max size of 15cm long x 15cm wide
    • At least two working nodes in the field with independant searching capability
    • Each node in the field should be operated wirelessly using the micaz
    • Nodes located outside the field may use micaz or any other type of controller and may be wired to a basestation

  • Field Specifications
    • Approx. 3m x 3m
    • A box of 30cm x 30cm x 30cm will be place in a random place in the field unknown to the teams prior to the start of the event

  • Graphical Interface
    • Display the field with fixed reference
    • A start button to start the nodes at the beginning of the event
    • Display the location of the nodes at any point in time (refresh rate of 2 seconds or less)
    • Display the location of the box once it is found

  • Localization
    • Nodes will be located randomly in the field
    • Nodes are supposed to localize themselves
    • Basestation may assist in localizing the nodes
    • Localize the nodes in real-time

  • Team budget
    • $250 per team

  • Provided Items per team (not including standard units available in the lab)
    • 4 micaz
    • 1 interface board to connect the micaz to the computer
    • 3 motor kits with wheels
