Faculty Member

Dr. Sihua Shao currently serves as an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering at New Mexico Tech. He obtains the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and the Hashimoto Prize for best doctoral dissertation from New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2018. He is honored to receive the NSF CRII Award and NM EPSCoR Mentor Award in 2023. He is a Senior Member of IEEE. His area of expertise is wireless communication and networking, mainly focusing on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, integrated sensing and communication, optical wireless communication, backscatter communication, machine learning in communications and networking, wireless communication and networking in harsh environments, UAV assisted wireless networks, heterogeneous radio-optical wireless networks, positioning, navigation and timing.

Ph.D. Students

Michelle Sherman (Spring 21 - Present) is a Ph.D. student with the Department of Electrical Engineering and an M.S. student with the Department of Mathematics at New Mexico Tech. She obtained the B.S. degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering with a Minor in Optical Science and Engineering from New Mexico Tech in 2020. She joined Dr. Shao's research group in Spring 2021. She was awarded as one of the Top Three Outstanding Engineering Students of the Year by the Society of Professional Engineers at New Mexico Tech. She was also honored with the Founder's Award at New Mexico Tech. Her research interests include machine learning, unmanned vehicles, intelligent reflecting surfaces, wireless networks.

M.S. Students

Patrick Duane (Fall 22 – Present) is an M.S. student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at New Mexico Tech. He obtained the B.S. degree in Computer Science with a Minor in Electrical Engineering from New Mexico Tech in 2022. He joined Dr. Shao’s research group in Spring 2022. He is an alum of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. His research interests include machine learning, wireless networks, and robotics.



Alejandra Mayorga-Del Valle (Fall 21 - Present) is an M.S. student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at New Mexico Tech. She obtained the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from New Mexico Tech in 2019. She joined Dr. Shao's research group in Fall 2021. Her research interests include cybersecurity, embedded systems security, communications and networking.



Undergraduate Students

Adrian Salustri (Fall 21 – Present) is a senior student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at New Mexico Tech. He joined Dr. Shao's research group in Fall 2021. His research interests include real-time signal processing, human-computer interfaces, and formal methods in systems engineering.




Mathew Salas (Spring 22 - Present) is a senior student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at New Mexico Tech. He joined Dr. Shao's research group in Spring 2022. His research interests include mechatronics, automation engineering, and communications and signal processing.




Alexander Williams (Summer 23 - Present) is a sophomore student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at New Mexico Tech. He joined Dr. Shao's research group in Summer 2023. His research interests include RF systems and antenna design.



Alexander Heusser (Fall 22 - Spring 23) is a junior student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at New Mexico Tech. He joined Dr. Shao's research group in Fall 2022. His research interests include optics, RF systems, and antenna design.
